FOS is a dietary fiber and does not get metabolized in the human digestive tract. It is an unavailable carbohydrate and do not give rise to blood sugar levels. Being a prebiotic fiber, FOS fermentation leads to secretion of metabolites as butyrate, propionate and acetate. Studies have shown that propionate supplementation has improved glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity. The present document highlights various interventional studies that demonstrate the effect of FOS on glycemic control.
